Vol. 147 No. 5

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vehicles Duties.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the revenue derived from import, excise and other duties on mechanically propelled vehicles, and parts thereof, for each of the financial years from 1944-45 to 1953-54, inclusive.

As the answer to this question includes a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the official report.

Following is the statement:—

The figures of customs receipts given in the table are composed of receipts derived from imports under the heads of motor cars, parts and accessories (Tariff Ref. No. 154), steam cars (Tariff Ref. No. 234), windscreens, etc. (Tariff Ref. No. 264/2), sparking plugs and parts (Tariff Ref. Nos. 206 and 207/1), number plates (Tariff Ref. No. 161/2), springs, etc. (Tariff Ref. No. 12/1) and accumulators (Tariff Ref. No. 1). The bulk of the receipts for each year is derived from the first head, i.e., Tariff Ref. No. 154. The receipts under the last two heads, i.e., Tariff Ref. Nos. 1 and 12/1, include an amount attributable to articles imported for use otherwise than on mechanically propelled vehicles and it is not possible to segregate such amount, which in any event is not significant, without an excessive expenditure of official time.

The excise figures represent the duty charged on home-made tyres and tubes.
