Vol. 147 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Boat Losses.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that five boats of the Glengad fishing fleet were wrecked at Portaleen during the recent storms, and that, in the past ten years, 30 boats have been lost there, and, if so, if he will (i) have a safe anchorage provided at that port, and (ii) arrange for the replacement of lost boats on more favourable terms than at present apply.

I much regretted to learn of the serious losses caused to fishermen at Portaleen by the recent storms there. I refer the Deputy to the reply I gave to Deputy McMenamin on 15th instant regarding the steps being taken to improve conditions at the port. As to the last part of the question, I am having the possibility of providing some special measure of assistance towards the replacement of boats lost in the recent storms examined.

Surely the Parliamentary Secretary is not satisfied that the information given in yesterday's reply to Deputy McMenamin's question will deal with the situation there. Or is he satisfied that it will?

I informed Deputy McMenamin yesterday that the Office of Public Works was awaiting a report from the Donegal County Engineer in relation to the undertaking which he gave to submit a report of the improvements which could be economically carried out by the Donegal County Council.

What is the Deputy's Department going to do on its own bat?

I understand the Office of Public Works is awaiting the report promised by the county engineer. So far it has not come.
