Vol. 148 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - C.I.E. Reorganisation.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the intentions of the Government in regard to the provision of the capital required by C.I.E. to finance the reorganisation programme, which was approved by the previous Government in 1953, and (b) whether the delay in introducing proposals for legislation to increase the present statutory limit on capital borrowings by the board has necessitated any modification of this programme or is in any way responsible, directly or indirectly, for the redundancy now arising at the Inchicore workshops.

Proposals for legislation to extend the authorised capital of C.I.E. as necessary to meet the cost of the board's reorganisation programmes are at present under examination. As the board have unexpended borrowing powers of £4,500,000 under existing legislation the latter part of the question does not arise.
