Vol. 148 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income-tax on House Property.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total amount of income-tax (Schedule A) assessed on local authorities in the financial year 1953/54 in respect of dwelling houses let under the Housing Acts.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider introducing proposals for legislation to amend Section 5 of the Finance Act, 1954, to include in the relief given thereby house property let by local authorities under the Housing Acts.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 17 and 18 together.

I am not aware of any reason for introducing proposals for legislation on the lines suggested by the Deputy. In this connection I should like to point out that, so long as the allowable charges of a local authority exceed its statutory income for income-tax purposes, no ultimate liability to tax arises in respect of the annual value of houses owned by the local authority and let under the Housing Acts.
