Vol. 448 No. 1

Written Answers. - Residential Property Tax.

Ivor Callely

Question:

61 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the public disquiet of home owners in relation to residential property tax; if he will give consideration to the abolition of this tax; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1654/95]

The Government is conscious of the controversy which surrounded the 1994 extension of the Residential Property Tax and has indicated, in its Programme of Renewal, that the 1994 changes to the income and house value thresholds will be reversed in the 1995 budget.

The Government programme has given a further commitment to commission a professional study to see how a fair and reasonable system of funding of local government can be introduced. The future of the Residential Property Tax will be considered in the context of this study.
