Vol. 148 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Replacement of National Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of (1) national schools which require to be replaced by new ones, and (2) new schools at present in course of erection.

I am advised that there are approximately 770 national schools which require to be replaced by new schools. Grants have been sanctioned by my Department for the erection of new buildings in 190 of these cases and work is in progress in 79 of these latter. In addition, work is in progress on the erection of four new schools to serve areas in which there is no school at present.

As regards the cases, numbering approximately 580, in which grants for new schools have not yet been sanctioned, arrangements with a view to replacement have reached varying stages, according to the particular circumstances of each case. In a number of them, however, the question of replacement is not a matter of immediate urgency.
