asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of (a) established and (b) unestablished civil servants in employment on 1st January, 1955, or the nearest available date and the total annual remuneration and allowances paid under both heads on the date mentioned.

On 1st January, 1954—which is the nearest available date for which the information sought by the Deputy is available—the numbers were (a) established civil servants, 17,535, and (b) unestablished civil servants, 16,122; the total annual rate of remuneration and allowances payable was £9,384,833 and £4,755,397, respectively.

The figures do not include persons casually employed or payments in respect of overtime or the like.
