Vol. 149 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Primary Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state how many primary school teachers have continued in service after reaching the statutory retiring age during each of the years 1950 to 1954, inclusive.

The arrangement under which, in view of the shortage of trained teachers, certain national school teachers are permitted to continue in the service after reaching the normal retiring age of 65 years has been in operation only since 30th September, 1953. The numbers of teachers reaching the age of 65 years in the year ended 31st December, 1953, who were continued in the service beyond that age were 20 men, 41 women. The numbers of teachers reaching the age of 65 years in the year ended 31st December, 1954, who were continued in the service beyond that age were 44 men, 85 women.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state how many untrained primary teachers have been appointed since 1950.

I would ask the Deputy to be so good as to repeat this question in a fortnight or so, when I hope to be able to give him the information requested.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state what percentage of trained primary teachers have left the service during the last ten years other than those retiring on reaching the age limit or those who died.

I regret that I am not in a position to furnish the Deputy with the statistics for the period of ten years which he has requested. The following figures relate to the last four years:—

1950/ 51

1951/ 52

1952/ 53

1953/ 54

(1) Number of women trained teachers who were required to retire on marriage

56

70

76

72

(2) Number of trained teachers, men and women, who retired owing to other causes before reaching the com pulsory retirement age

57

63

57

55

Total

113

133

133

127

The totals represent between 1 and 2 per cent. of the total number of trained teachers.

The numbers given as having retired owing to causes other than marriage include teachers appointed as inspectors and teachers whose service was being interrupted for a limited period only and who might subsequently resume duty in national schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state what percentage of serving primary teachers are graduates of a university.

The total number of teachers recognised on the staffs of national schools is approximately 13,000. The number of teachers who are in receipt of bonuses in respect of university degrees is 1,025, i.e., approximately 8 per cent.
