Vol. 149 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Development Fund.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the schemes approved by his predecessor for financing from the National Development Fund prior to the 2nd June, 1954, indicating in respect of each scheme the amount allocated and the amount spent on it to date, or whether it has been abandoned by the present Government: (b) the new schemes not approved by his predecessor which have been approved by him since the 2nd June, 1954, giving in respect of each scheme the amount allocated and the amount spent on it to date.

As the reply includes two tabular statements, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have them circulated in the Official Report.

Following are the statements:—

On assuming office last year I arranged for a review by the Ministers concerned of all proposals for grants out of the National Development Fund made before 2nd June, 1954. As a result of that review, the following adjustments fall to be made in the above statement of schemes approved prior to that date: No. 1 — has been reduced by £400,000; No. 5 — for the time being, the cost of the survey only, estimated at £1,500, is accepted as a charge against the fund; No. 6 — has been abandoned; No. 9 — abandoned so far as concerns sheep (to cost £8,000): for a pig progeny testing station £33,000 (net) has been allocated; No. 10 — is being reconsidered; No. 12 — has been deferred; No. 14 — is being reconsidered; No. 15 — only £423,000 has so far been allocated to the revised areas selected for the scheme.

Furthermore, the allocation for No. 3 has been reduced to £400,000 consequential on the harbour commissioners modifying their original scheme.

SCHEMES APPROVED SINCE 2ND JUNE, 1954.
