Vol. 149 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mussel Purifying Tank.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will examine the possibility of establishing a purifying tank at a vantage point along the coast between Dundalk and Omeath for the purpose of reviving the mussel export trade.

I will arrange, if the local gatherers of mussels so desire, to send an officer of my Department to discuss with them the possibilities of having local takings of mussels purified in a manner acceptable to the local public health authority. I cannot give any hope that State moneys can be provided towards the cost of erection of a purification station, but my Department has some information which may be of interest to the local gatherers as to a type of purification plant of small scope and reasonable cost which has been recently set up by mussel gatherers in Great Britain and which, it is understood, is functioning satisfactorily.
