Vol. 149 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schools: Erection and Repair.

asked the Minister for Education what is the present position in regard to the proposal to erect a new school at Carlanstown, County Meath.

A grant has been sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of the erection of a new school to replace the present Carlanstown National School. It is a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works to make the arrangements for the erection of the new building. These arrangements will necessarily take a considerable time to complete, but they will be dealt with as expeditiously as possible, having regard to the many other cases on hands, which demand attention.

asked the Minister for Education whether proposals have been formulated in connection with the repair of Bouleensharen National School, Ballyheigue, County Kerry, and, if so, whether the work will be carried out during the forthcoming summer holidays.

The Commisioners of Public Works have been asked by my Department to furnish a report as to the feasibility of carrying out a scheme for the reconstruction and improvement of Bouleensharen Boys' and Girls' National Schools, County Kerry. I understand from the commissioners that they are actively considering what would be the most suitable course of action to take as regards these school premises and that they will report in the case as soon as possible. When their report is received my Department will communicate at once with the reverend manager.

In the circumstances I regret I cannot give any indication as to when it is likely that actual work on a scheme for this school could be commenced.

Mr. Egan

asked the Minister for Education whether he is now in a position to authorise the Offaly County Council to pay a grant to the Offaly Vocational Committee for the provision and equipment of vocational schools at Edenderry and Clara.

Before the Minister for Local Government can be advised to sanction the making of a grant of this nature, my Department has to be satisfied regarding the proposed educational, financial and building arrangements, including suitable school plans. These preliminaries are now at an advanced stage and it is hoped to be able to recommend the making of a grant for at least one of the two schools at an early date.
