Vol. 149 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Taxation.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider reducing the present rates of motor taxation to a nominal figure, and increasing the duty on petrol in lieu thereof.

The duty on petrol is levied for general Exchequer purposes, whereas the proceeds of the motor vehicle duties flow into the Road Fund.

The Deputy's suggestion—which, in one form or another, has been considered before without finding favour with any of my predecessors—raises complex issues and I am afraid I cannot hold out any hope of any change in the existing arrangements at the present time.
