Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pensioned Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) the number of national teachers who were on pension on 31st December, 1949, and their average pension for that year; (b) the number estimated to be entitled to the ex-gratia payment in lieu of gratuity, and the total sum originally estimated to be required to pay the full gratuity to pre-1950 pensioned teachers, and (c) the number of pensioners, the average pension, and the average full ex-gratia payment in the case of those who retired (i) prior to 1930, (ii) from 1930 to 1935, (iii) from 1935 to 1940, (iv) from 1940 to 1945, and (v) from 1945 to 1949.

(a) The number of national teachers who were on pension on 31st December, 1949, including those who retired on pension on that date was 3,004; their average pension for 1949 was £177.

(b) The number estimated to be entitled to the ex-gratia grants under the National School Teachers' Superannuation (Amendment) Scheme, 1953 is 3,004; the total amount estimated to be required to pay the full gratuity to these 3,004 teachers is £1,220,000.

The figures of average ex-gratia payments made in respect of each of the above categories of teachers is not readily available.

Might I ask the Parliamentary Secretary why is it, when I wrote to the Department of Education about four months ago requesting that information, I could not get it, but I can get it now when I ask a question here in the Dáil?
