Vol. 150 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands why the application of Mr. Thomas Hanahoe, Rathcash, Killala, County Mayo, for an addition to his small holding from the adjacent Campbell lands was not granted by the Land Commission; and if, in view of the fact that some years ago the Land Commission promised Mr. Hanahoe, who is an old I.R.A. man with a military service medal, an enlargement on the Campbell estate, he will request the commission to reconsider its decision in the matter.

The selection of allottees is a reserved function of the commissioners and it is not their practice to disclose the reasons for their decisions.

Mr. Hanahoe holds an accommodation plot which was allotted to his father. His application for additional land was fully considered in competition with the claims of all other applicants but it was not found possible to grant it. He was not promised that he would get an enlargement.

asked the Minister for Lands why the applications of two tenants of county council houses at Rathreagh, Kincon, Killala, for accommodation plots on the Boland estate, Courthill, were not granted, in view of the fact that accommodation plots have previously been given to other tenants of county council cottages in the district, and that there is very little employment available there.

I understand that the Boland holding has not yet been entirely allotted but if, when allotment is completed, it is found that these cottiers have been unsuccessful, it must be assumed that the Land Commission had not sufficient land available to meet their requirements after the needs of more deserving applicants had been met.
