Vol. 150 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Weights and Measures Inspections.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if any firms of manufacturers or distributors are exempt from inspection or supervision by the inspectors of weights and measures, and, if so, why.

Every firm which carries on a trade involving the use of weights and measures which purport to conform to the State standards for weights and measures is obliged to comply with the law relating to weights and measures, and is subject to inspection by an inspector of weights and measures.

Is the Minister aware that I have received complaints that the Department's weights and measures inspectors are not permitted to examine the contents of containers of stout manufactured by Messrs. Arthur Guinness and that they cannot intercept the lorries coming out to check them for weights and measures? Will the Minister check and see if that is true?

I may mention that no complaints or representations have been received in the Department on this subject. If the Deputy will make representations on any matter, I will ensure that it will be examined.
