Vol. 150 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rearrangement of Holdings.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the rearrangement of mixed holdings by the Land Commission has been held up in many areas as a result of frivolous and deliberate objections, and, if so, if he will introduce legislation to deal with the matter.

I am aware of cases in which tenants involved in proposed rearrangement schemes have adopted unreasonable attitudes to the detriment of their neighbours' interests and their own.

The Land Commission has the legislative powers necessary to resume holdings for the purpose of rearrangement but, as these powers are very harsh, they have not used them so far. I requested the Land Commission some weeks ago to consider resuming part or all of an objector's holding in any case where the objector has not a just cause for objection and where it is clear that he is getting a fair and just settlement.
