Vol. 150 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Flat Iron.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will permit the free importation of 1¼ in x ¼ in, flat iron from England or the Continent in view of the fact that Irish Steel, Limited, will not manufacture such iron until October next.

When for any reason Irish Steel Holdings, Limited, are not in a position to meet full home requirements, it has been the practice to permit the duty free importation of such quantities of the material as will meet current needs without detriment to the future production of the company.

The arrangements to meet the current situation, including a determination of the extent to which duty free importation may be permitted, are at present being worked out.

When is it proposed to allow the importation of this type of iron without a licence?

Is not that information contained in the answer? The arrangements to meet the current situation, including a determination of the extent to which duty free importation may be permitted, are at present being worked out.

But when will the people be able to import it?

Very shortly.
