Vol. 151 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax Evasion.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of investigations at present being conducted by the Revenue Commissioners in regard to under-assessment resulting from fraud and evasion of taxes on income and profits, and the approximate total of tax in assessment involved.

It is impossible to state the number of investigations at present being conducted by the Revenue Commissioners in cases of under-assessment resulting from fraud and evasion, or the amount of tax involved. Fraud or evasion may be suspected but it can be established only at the completion of the inquiry. Similarly, it is only at the end of the inquiry that the amount of the under-assessment, if any, can be determined. There are at present some 600 cases at varying stages of investigation.
