Vol. 151 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income and Profit Taxes.

asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of assessments outstanding in respect of taxes on income and profit in respect of a period of from one to five years.

It is estimated that the total amount still to be collected in respect of taxes inclusive of incometax, surtax and corporation profits tax which were assessed more than one year ago, is in the neighbourhood of £3.8 million. It may be taken that almost all of this relates to tax assessed within the preceding five years.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the widespread opinion that the revenue is being defrauded by evasion of taxes on income and profits, he will state (a) the number of inspectors of taxes actually engaged on special investigation and back duty work during the preceding 12 months, (b) the total assessments raised as a result of such investigations, and (c) the total penalties included in such assessments.

(a) The staff actually engaged on special investigation and back duty work during the year ended on the 31st March, 1955, consisted of one senior inspector full time, one higher grade inspector one-third time and one professional accountant one-half time. (b) For the same year the total sum accepted by the Revenue Commissioners in respect of unassessed tax and mitigated penalties was approximately £100,000. (c) It is estimated that the sum included for mitigated penalties is approximately £2,400.
