Vol. 151 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford Garda Strength.

asked the Minister for Justice whether, in view of the number of crimes committed recently in the Toureneena district, County Waterford, he will take steps to have the number of Gardaí in the local station increased in order to provide the necessary protection for the people living in the district.

As only two indictable offences were committed in the Toureneena area during the past 12 months, an increase in the strength of the Garda station which serves the area, to cope with the crime situation, does not appear to be required.

Does the Minister consider two policemen sufficient to patrol a mountainous area extending well over 20 miles?

I have inquired as to the strength of the Gardaí in the particular area and I am informed that there is a patrol car ready and available and that there were only two small indictable offences committed in the area in the past 12 months. Even if we had 20 extra Guards there, it would not prevent a bicycle being stolen.

If you had enough Guards or good enough Guards, you might discover the people who stole it.

The Deputy is well aware of the reason why the gentleman is not arrested yet.
