Vol. 151 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilglass Farm, Roscommon.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the 120 acre non-residential farm of Mr. J.J. Glancy, Glen and Tully, Kilglass, County Roscommon, for the relief of acute local congestion, and, if so, with what result.

Proceedings for the acquisition of this estate were instituted in 1952 and the owner's objection thereto was subsequently allowed. The Land Commission have recently reviewed the position but do not propose to take any further action in the matter at present.

Is the Minister aware that this farm was purchased by a gentleman within the past two months? In view of the fact that his Department was notified of this purchase, would the Minister state why the Land Commission do not propose to acquire the farm?

The commissioners do not give me the reason.

In view of the fact that the Land Commission saw fit to acquire this farm; that the owner beat them by an objection on the grounds that his son was going to live on it, and seeing that the farm has been purchased by an outsider, would the Minister direct the attention of the Land Commission to ensuring that if it were feasible and right to acquire the farm in 1952 it is still more necessary to acquire it at the present moment? Small holdings in the vicinity of this farm have been badly flooded by the Shannon in the past few months. Eight months ago I asked the Minister whether in view of this serious flooding he would put that point before the commissioners as showing the necessity for acquiring the land.

I will bring the Deputy's remarks to the notice of the commissioners.
