Vol. 151 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Transport Problems.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is now in a position to make a statement as a result of his study of transport problems in County Donegal.

As I indicated in reply to a similar question on 2nd March, the subject of public transport in County Donegal was discussed by my predecessor with our nominees on the G.N.R. Board, who undertook to consider the matter and to submit a report. I have asked that the submission of this report should be expedited, but it has not yet come to hand. I am, accordingly, not in a position to make any statement on the matter at the moment.

Apart from that, has the Minister done anything in the way of making any study of the matter?

The G.N.R. Board was the board considered appropriate by my predecessor to ask for a report in this matter. I think that it was a wise proceeding to ask them to report on the matter because it is possibly one which will affect their activities. The board have not yet submitted a report to me. The information I have from them is that they have set up a committee to examine the relative economics of diesel rail and road transport in County Donegal; I was told the committee was expected to report shortly. So far I have not received the report, but I have made it clear to the chairman of the board that I am most anxious to get the report at the earliest possible date.
