Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of poles erected, miles of line strung, consumers connected, and areas completed, under the rural electrification scheme in the financial year 1954-55.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

The following is the statement:—

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the total capital investment to date by the E.S.B. in the rural electrification scheme, (b) the average capital cost of development per area, at 1955 prices, (c) the total fixed charge revenue from consumers connected to date, and (d) the average fixed charge revenue per area.

The information sought has been obtained from the E.S.B. and, as it is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

NOTES.

1. The figure in Column 1 for the period subsequent to 31st March, 1955, is estimated.

2. Figures for fixed charge revenue from consumers are not available for the period subsequent to 31st March, 1955. The figure given applies to domestic consumers only; other consumers are charged on flat rates.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total amount remaining due to the Central Fund in respect of advances made to the E.S.B. for the rural electrification scheme, and indicate what part of that amount is, under the terms of the Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) Act, 1945, due to be repaid out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is £11,511,721. The liability remaining outstanding in respect of the moiety which, under the terms of the Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) Act, 1945, was to have been repaid out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas is £4,825,600.
