Vol. 152 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killala Water Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether the water scheme at Killala, County Mayo, is being proceeded with, and, if not, why not; if it is being proceeded with, what is the cause of the delay; further, if he will make a statement on the position generally.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is now in a position to state when the new waterworks at Killala will be completed.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 11 and 12 together.

Work on this scheme was held up because of delays in the delivery of the pumping and filtration plant. It is understood that work should have been restarted on the 1st April last, but that the contractors have so far failed to resume operations. I am informed that the county council is considering the best means of securing completion of the contract with the least possible delay.

Is the Minister aware that we have been awaiting this water scheme for the last two years in Killala and that we are still awaiting it?

Possibly the Deputy has more influence with the county council than I have. I do not wish to dictate to them in any way about their affairs and the manner in which they conduct them.

Except that the Minister, six months ago, told me that the scheme would be completed by now.

The Deputy is very well aware that the local authorities have remedies against contractors who fail to carry out their contract. Be it far from me to advise the local authority as to what they should do. They have their own legal advisers.
