Vol. 152 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postal Vote.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider introducing legislation to allow a postal vote for general and local elections to those electors who are unable to go to the polls because of ill-health or other reasonable cause.

I have given consideration to the possibility of extending to other classes the facilities at present afforded to members of the Defence Forces for postal voting at Dáil elections. I am not satisfied that it would be practicable to overcome the difficulties involved including in particular the prevention of electoral abuses and the safeguarding of the secrecy of the ballot. There is no postal voting at local elections, nor are any proposals for its introduction under consideration.
