Vol. 152 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reafforestation.

asked the Minister for Lands what is the cause of the delay in implementing afforestation schemes in the Sneem district, County Kerry, and whether he is now in a position to issue a definite decision in the matter.

There has been no avoidable delay in commencing forestry operations at Slievenashaskea and Eskine in the Sneem district where areas have recently been acquired. Work on fencing at Eskine will be started this summer.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the necessity for developing afforestation schemes in the Mastergeehy, Filemore, Glenbeigh, and Caherciveen areas, County Kerry, and, if so, if he will arrange for the establishment of a forestry centre there.

An area of 230 acres has recently been acquired for forestry purposes at Tullingealane which is very close to Mastergeehy. The area is attached to Killorglin forest.

No offers of land in the Filemore area have been received by my Department.

Glenbeigh property, Killorglin forest has been acquired for some years and work is currently in progress there.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is proposed to avail of the offers of land for forestry purposes in the Glenhest and Skerdagh areas of North Mayo, and, if so, when; and how soon after acquisition work will begin.

Of three offers of land in the districts mentioned one has been inspected and is under consideration. The remaining two offers were received very recently, but inspection will be arranged at an early date.

Pending a decision as to whether or not proceedings for acquisition should be undertaken it is not possible to give any forecast of the probable date of commencement of forestry operations.
