Vol. 153 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Migration of Tenants.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that it is the policy of the Land Commission to migrate small non-vested land holders to the exclusion of vested holders, and, if so, if he will take such steps as are necessary in order that the commission may migrate vested land owners who are willing to surrender their holdings for the purpose of migration.

Policy in this matter does not follow the lines suggested by the Deputy. Owners of vested holdings are not excluded from migration schemes.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the policy of the Land Commission reacts against migration from County Kerry in so far as that policy requires that the non-vested tenants be migrated? Is he further aware that we have a total of 2,000 non-vested tenants as against approximately 11,000 in Mayo and 9,000 in Galway, which means that our quota in accordance with that proportion is very low? In recent years our quota was one-tenth of the total.

Will the Deputy say what is the question he is asking?

I am asking the Minister, through the Parliamentary Secretary, to adjust the policy of the Land Commission in regard to the transfer of migrants, and that vested tenants be transferred from County Kerry as well as non-vested.

I will convey the contents of the Deputy's speech to the Minister.

Is the Minister aware that it is only vested holdings of very large acreage that are accepted by the Land Commission for this purpose?

That is not so.
