Vol. 153 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurance Scheme Withdrawal.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce (1) if he is aware that the Insurance Corporation of Ireland, Limited, is in process of withdrawing its scheme of insurance for surgical, nursing and hospital expenses, (2) if there is any other Irish company proposing to develop this business, (3) if a Government scheme is in contemplation, or if any modification is intended in the existing law so as to permit citizens desiring this class of insurance to effect it with external companies or societies.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the affirmative. I have no information, however, in regard to the question whether any other Irish company proposes to develop this class of insurance business. With regard to the remaining parts of the Deputy's question, the Minister for Health took steps in February, 1955, to establish an advisory body on voluntary health insurance. Under its terms of reference the advisory body will advise the Minister for Health as to the feasibility of introducing a scheme of voluntary insurance which would enable persons to insure themselves and their dependents against the cost of hospital, surgical and medical expenses. I am informed that the advisory body hopes to present its report in the near future. The question of modifying the existing law will be considered in the light of the advisory body's report.
