Vol. 154 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Newsprint Industry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether inquiries into the possibility of establishing a newsprint industry in this country have been completed, and, if so, with what result.

Inquiries which the Industrial Development Authority have made indicate that there are reasonable prospects that a newsprint industry could be successfully established in this country, provided that sufficient and suitable supplies of native timber were available for the manufacture of mechanical woodpulp.

The authority is actively pursuing the matter.

The Deputy may be aware that an Irish paper company recently announced its intention to establish an industry to cater for the newsprint needs of the country should experiments which it is conducting into the pulping of Irish timber be successful, and should the timber required be available.
