Vol. 154 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alternative Cross-Channel Service.

andMr. T. Lynch asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the unsatisfactory conditions prevailing during the tourist season on the Dún Laoghaire-Holyhead route, he will consider the advisability of recommending to Bord Fáilte Éireann, C.I.E., British Railways and the Cork Steampacket Company that attention be drawn by advertising to the alternative routes most suitable for persons travelling from the south of England to the south of Ireland, viz. Fishguard to Rosslare, Fishguard to Waterford and Fishguard to Cork.

The interests concerned are already alive to the possibility of relieving pressure on the Holyhead-Dún Laoghaire services during the tourist season by greater use of the other routes. Peak travel periods tend to coincide on all the routes but, nevertheless, British Railways are examining the possibility of influencing travellers to southern counties to use the Fishguard services to a greater extent.

The advertising of particular services to and from this country is, of course, a matter entirely for the shipping companies concerned. I am aware that the cross-Channel shipping companies jointly issue a brochure, with map, which gives particulars of all the cross-Channel services.
