Vol. 154 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Road Grant Reduction.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the reason for the reduction in the supplementary grant for road improvement to Mayo County Council from £22,500 in 1954-1955, to £7,500 in 1955-1956.

The main and county road improvement grants, including supplementary grants, notified to the Mayo County Council represented a net increase of £3,100 for 1955-56 over 1954-55. The reduction in the supplementary grant referred to by the Deputy was more than offset by the substantial increase in the total amount of the grants notified early in the year as compared with 1954-55. The aim in distributing the additional moneys made available for supplementary grants in the current financial year was to maintain the overall total of grants at the same level approximately as in the preceding year.

Would the Minister not agree that any increase in the main grant was justified by a corresponding increase in the Road Fund?

That is a separate question.
