Vol. 154 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Land Reclamation.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that large tracts of fertile land in County Meath are waterlogged, and that land reclamation work cannot be carried out because of the state of the Boyne and its tributaries, and, if so, when the survey of the Boyne catchment will be undertaken, and when drainage operations are likely to commence.

The need for arterial drainage works in the Boyne catchment area is fully appreciated. It is proposed to commence a topographical survey of the area during the current year for the purpose of a scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. I can give no indication at this stage as to when it may be possible to start actual works on the scheme.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary give the time estimated to carry out the survey and other necessary operations?

I could not.

Would it be three or five or six years?

I have not a clue.
