Vol. 154 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Erne Drainage.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement in relation to the drainage of the River Erne; whether any discussions have taken place recently with the Government of the Six Counties in relation to the execution of the scheme, and if he is aware of the great damage being caused to thousands of acres of valuable land in Counties Cavan, Leitrim and Longford as a result of flooding which can be relieved only by the joint action of the two Governments without further delay.

The necessity for a comprehensive drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, for the River Erne catchment area is recognised but in view of the present commitments of the Commissioners of Public Works it is not possible at this stage to say when an engineering survey for that purpose can be undertaken. Until that survey has been completed, it will not be possible to determine the extent, if any, to which joint action as suggested by the Deputy might be called for.
