Vol. 155 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Treatment for Irish Political Prisoners.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he is aware of allegations of ill-treatment of Irish political prisoners in Wormwood Scrubbs and Wakefield Prisons, Great Britain, and, if so, what steps he proposes to take; and, if not, whether he will have inquiries made.

I am not aware of any allegations of the nature in question, apart from some from a source which is not reliable. Accordingly, I do not propose to take any steps in the matter.

If information from a reliable sources is furnished will the Minister undertake to have the matter considered?

When I get the information, I shall consider the matter.

Can the Minister say if he is satisfied that there is no ill-treatment being meted out to prisoners at the present moment?

That is a separate question.

Is the Minister satisfied that the prisoners are not being ill-treated?

I have no information except from a source which is not reliable.

In order to allay the public uneasiness which has been aroused regarding this matter, would the Minister state whether he is satisfied that the men are not being ill-treated?

If I get reliable information, I shall have the matter considered.
