Vol. 155 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Little Island (Cork) School.

asked the Minister for Education what progress has been made towards the provision of a new school or the extension of the present premises at Little Island, Cork; whether he is aware that, because of the great increase in the number of pupils, a house condemned by the medical officer has at present to be used as a temporary school, and, if 80, if he will have the case treated as a matter of urgency.

The reverend manager has offered a site for the erection of a new school at Little Island, Cork, and the Department is at present investigating the question of the accommodation which will be required in the new building. When a decision has been reached on this point, the Commissioners of Public Works will be asked to report on the suitability of the proposed site. If the site is regarded as acceptable the preliminary arrangements for the erection of the new school will be attended to as expeditiously as possible.

I am aware that, in order that two teachers and their classes may not have to share one of the rooms in the present school, one class is being accommodated in a room in a nearby dwelling-house which cannot be regarded as suitable for school purposes. The Department is investigating, as a matter of urgency, the possibility of having better arrangements made to alleviate the position pending the erection of the new school.
