Vol. 156 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flush Lavatories in Schools.

asked the Minister for Education whether his Department has under consideration the question of installing flush lavatories in new and reconditioned national schools in rural areas in replacement of the present out-of-date disease-spreading accommodation.

My Department encourages and assists, in every possible way, the provision of water-flushed systems of sanitation at new national schools and at existing schools which are being extensively reconstructed or improved with the aid of State grants.

It is the standard practice to provide water-carriage sanitation at all such schools in rural areas, where local conditions permit, that is to say, where an adequate and constant supply of water can be obtained for flushing purposes and where satisfactory arrangements can be made for sewage disposal either by means of a public sewer or a septic tank system.
