Vol. 156 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cavan Afforestation Statistics.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in respect of County Cavan the area of land in the possession of the Forestry Division of his Department and the area under the control of the Forestry Division which is planted.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in respect of each of the last five years the area of land in County Cavan which has been (a) offered for forestry purposes to the Forestry Division of his Department, (b) inspected with a view to acquisition, (c) rejected as unsuitable for forestry purposes, and (d) acquired for forestry purposes.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the area of land in County Cavan which at 31st March, 1956, was (a) on offer to the Forestry Division of his Department, (b) awaiting inspection with a view to acquisition, and (c) inspected and in the course of acquisition.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 6, 7 and 8 together.

The total area of land held in County Cavan by the Forestry Division on 1st April, 1956, was 4,628 acres, of which 2,130 acres had been planted.

The area acquired in each of the last five years was as follows:—

1951-52

Nil

1952-53

25 acres

1953-54

1,904 acres

1954-55

103 acres

1955-56

634 acres

The position on 31st March, 1956, was that there were areas totalling 3,800 acres on offer to Forestry Division. Areas totalling 1,650 acres were awaiting inspection and the balance, 2,150 acres, had all been inspected. Of the offers inspected a total of 986 acres was in course of acquisition and further investigations were proceeding in the balance.

The Department's statistics are not kept in a form which would enable the details requested at (a), (b) and (c) of Question No. 7 to be furnished: it would involve disproportionate expenditure on staff time to extract the information.
