Vol. 156 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Re-Allocation of Meath Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will give particulars of the various remnants of estates and small units in County Meath which have been acquired by the Land Commission but which have not yet been re-allocated, and if he will state the reasons for the delay in re-allocating such lands.

The area of the various remnants and small units on hands is subject to constant fluctuation. At present it amounts to some 1,200 acres of which by far the greater part consists of low quality bog and inferior plots. To furnish particulars in the detail requested would entail much time and investigation and it is not feasible to detach staff from land settlement work for such purpose. If the Deputy is interested in any particular case he can get the particulars concerning it by inquiry to the Land Commission.

Would the Minister tell me if the Land Commission have got a list of those remnants and small units which have been taken over and which have not been divided? If the Land Commission have such a list is there any reason why they will not supply it to this House?

They have not got a list in the way in which I presume the Deputy expects they have. They have an account of approximately over 700 small plots—some of them bog plots, some of them pieces of cut-away and some of them remnants of various estates that were divided up—in the various files all over the Department. I do not propose to furnish a list in the way the Deputy requires. If the Deputy would give any particular case or cases, I should be only too glad to give him information.

As a Deputy representing the constituency, I am interested in the whole 700 plots which the Land Commission have been holding for years. Apparently the Land Commission have forgotten about them.

That is not true.
