Vol. 156 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Grants.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state in respect of each local authority the total amount of grants for the repair, maintenance and reconstruction of roads paid by and/or administered by his Department in each of the financial years 1953-54 to 1955-56.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

As the Deputy is presumably mainly interested in allocations to county councils, a bulk figure only has been given for county borough, borough and urban district councils. Individual figures for these authorities are available and will be forwarded to the Deputy, if he requires them.

The particulars given in the statement are the grant allocations to the local authorities for works on public roads and include the normal Road Fund allocations for upkeep and improvement work, the tourist roads grants, special grants for bridge works and grants for schemes, the technical aspects of which are administered through the Department, like employment schemes, the scheme for the improvement of roads serving the E.S.B. turf-fired generating stations and the scheme for roads in Fíor-Ghaeltacht areas. As regards employment schemes, only those portions of the allocations devoted to road works are included.
