Vol. 156 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Glucose.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will recommend to Ceimicí Teoranta that a plant for the processing of glucose be added to the starch factory at Labadish, County Donegal, so that all the stages of glucose manufacture can be carried out at that centre.

The productive capacity of the glucose factory at Corroy, County Mayo, is sufficient to supply the entire needs of the country in glucose. I cannot, therefore, hold out any hope for the establishment of a glucose factory at Labadish.

May I take it from the Minister's reply that there have been no imports recently or there are no imports at present of glucose to this country?

The Deputy will understand that he has not asked for that information in his question. If he puts down a question on that subject I shall be glad to answer it. There is a substantial tariff now for the protection of home-manufactured glucose and the volume of glucose which is being produced at Corroy is sufficient to satisfy the national requirements in respect of glucose.
