Vol. 156 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Carbon from Peat.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that turf from County Donegal is being used for the production of activated carbon in a Derry factory, and, if so, if he will arrange to have the question of establishing a similar factory in County Donegal considered.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the fact that there is a plentiful supply of peat and labour available in the Ballycroy district, County Mayo, he will arrange for an investigation of the possibility of having a factory established there to manufacturer carbon from peat.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions No. 6 and No. 7 together.

I am aware that turf from County Donegal is being supplied to a factory established near Derry for the production of activated carbon.

As Deputies will appreciate the establishment of industries is primarily a matter for private enterprise. Should any interests submit to me a sound proposal for the establishment of an industry for the production of activated carbon at any suitable location in this country I shall be glad to assist in every way possible in bringing it to fruition.

Would the Minister not consider recommending to Bord na Móna that they are a suitable body to follow up this particular line?

It is primarily a matter in which private enterprise should first engage. If it is found impossible to induce private enterprise to engage in the production of activated carbon, other aspects of the matter can be considered. The Derry project was initiated by private enterprise and is so operated.
