Vol. 157 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cigarette and Tobacco Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that although the recent budgetary increases on cigarettes and tobacco took effect as from Monday, 14th May, by Order made by him regarding retail sales, some retailers charged their customers at the new rates prior to that date, and, if so, if he will make a statement clarifying the position.

I am not aware that there was any general tendency on the part of retailers to overcharge for cigarettes or tobacco between Budget day and the 14th May, 1956, when the new controlled prices took effect. Two complaints only were received in my Department and these are being investigated.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make an Order to reduce the recent increase in price of 4d. per 20 on Bristol and Players filter-tip cigarettes.

Control of the prices of cigarettes is limited to the standard brands in general use. If the brands referred to in the question were subject to price control, the appropriate increase resulting from the change in the tobacco duty would have been not less than 4d. per 20.

Might I ask the Minister would he consider the question of reducing the 5d. increase in the price of Woodbines? I think it is an exoibitant charge.

Surely that is a separate question?

Is the Minister's Department satisfied in the case of the cigarettes referred to, Bristol and Players filter-tip, their size being so small and because they contain so little tobacco, that an increase of 4d. is justified; or have they examined the matter at all?

The position is that the additional cost of the tobacco in these cigarettes is approximately 3½d. The additional charge is 4d. and the missing ½d. will be utilised for the purpose of increasing the tobacco content and increasing the margin on the cigarette.

Have I the Minister's assurance on that point, that the tobacco content will be increased?

I have told the Deputy what the facts are.
