Vol. 157 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grants for Cultural Activities.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state (a) the number of applications for grants received by the Committee on Cultural Relations from groups and organisations for the purpose of taking part in cultural activities and giving performances of a cultural nature abroad, and (b) the number of such groups and organisations to which grants were made.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state in respect of the period since the setting up of the Committee on Cultural Relations the names of the organisations to which grants were made by the committee, and the amount of the grant in each case.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 14 and 15 together.

1. As this answer is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, to circulate it with the Official Report.

I take it that the Deputy in reply to his second question desires the names of organisations to which grants were made on the recommendation of the Cultural Relations Committee for the purpose of taking part in cultural activities and giving performances of such a nature abroad. (a) Forty-three applications for grants have been received by the Cultural Relations Committee from groups and organisations wishing to take part in cultural activities and to give performances abroad. (b) In 22 cases grants were made.

2. The following is a list of organisations to which grants have been made from the Grant-in-Aid for Cultural Relations for the purpose of participation in cultural activities abroad, showing the amount of the grant made in each case:—

While I am at the disadvantage of not knowing what is in the statement to be circulated, would I be in order in asking what standards apply when the Committee on Cultural Relations is considering applications for grants?

That is a wider question than the one which the Deputy has put down. I know a number of factors are taken into consideration and, if the Deputy puts down a further question, I can probably give him the answer.
