Vol. 157 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Share Fishermen's Employment Contributions.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will introduce legislation to amend the Social Welfare Acts so that a boat owner will not be compelled to pay employment contributions in respect of share fishermen.

I do not propose to introduce legislation for the purpose indicated in the Deputy's question.

Is the Minister aware of the dissatisfaction that exists in this respect? I think the Minister will agree that it is unfair to have these men paying contributions and getting no benefits. I trust when the matter is clarified next week, the Minister will have something to say on this matter.

It is not correct to say that these men do not get any benefits. They get all the benefits except unemployment benefit. I would not say there is grave dissatisfaction in the matter. However, a decision will be made next week.
