Vol. 158 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Utilisation of Shark Carcases.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that, at Achill, a considerable quantity of shark carcases are being dumped back into the sea after the liver has been extracted, and that such carcases can be used for the production of fishmeal; and whether, with a view to providing much needed employment in the Achill area, he will arrange to have such an industry established there.

I am aware that some shark carcases, after removal of the liver for extraction of oil, have had to be dumped back into the sea at Achill when the numbers exceeded the quantity required by the firms which use such material in the manufacture of fish meal.

The question of extending the present facilities for the reduction of shark carcases to fish meal is one for private interests.
