Vol. 158 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Forestry Schemes.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that there are no State forest plantations in the Achill and Currane areas of County Mayo, and if, in view of the fact that there is a considerable amount of land in the area suitable for planting, he will take steps to initiate afforestation schemes in these areas.

A comprehensive survey of the Achill areas which was made by my Department revealed that the soil generally was poor and the area was adversely affected by exposure. If any offers come in, however, which would enable a forest to be established with a reasonable prospect of success, I will take immediate steps to initiate a scheme.
