Vol. 159 No. 11

Questions— Oral Answers. - Purchase of Erris Carrageen.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will make a statement on the present position in regard to the purchase by the Gaeltacht Services Division of his Department of this season's harvest of carrageen in the Erris area, County Mayo.

The Gaeltacht Services Division of my Department is prepared to purchase carrageen in the Erris area, County Mayo, and elsewhere, provided the carrageen is of suitable quality and price. The price to be paid must be related to the quality of the moss and to the market for which it is purchased. An officer of the division has paid periodic visits to the Erris area since the season opened, and he will continue to do so throughout the season with a view to purchasing any suitable carrageen available.
