Vol. 160 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Grants.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, in view of his recent statement in connection with the curtailment of main road grants to North Tipperary County Council, he will state whether the same amount of grant will be made available towards the repair of the county roads in that area.

Tipperary (N.R.) County Council have been informed that the full amount of the unexpended balance of the current year's main road improvement grant may be utilised for county road improvement works.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the total amount of grants made available by his Department to the Galway County Council for main roads and county roads in the year ended 31st March, 1956, (b) the amounts made available for the current year, (c) the amount transferred from main roads to county roads, and (d) if he has notified the local authority that it can go ahead with the work.

(a) £360,800; (b) £348,014; (c) the full balance of the current year's main road improvement grant unexpended at the 25th September, less any sum that may be approved for continuing work on main roads to avoid danger can be applied to the rolling of unrolled main roads or county road improvements. A decision as to how this balance should be allocated as between unrolled main roads and county roads rests with the county council in the first instance, and their reply has not yet been received. In these circumstances a reply to (c) cannot be furnished at this stage; (d) county councils have been informed that they can proceed with alternative county road improvement works within the limit of the full balance available from this year's main road improvement grant, provided that such county road works are in the approved five year plan for county road improvement.
