Vol. 160 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Cork Rural Improvement Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that an application for a rural improvement scheme grant for the carrying out of a most urgent and desirable work of general public utility was submitted some years ago by the residents of Corrydorrigan, Schull; and, if so, if, in view of the fact that the local contribution was paid a long time ago, he will, ensure that this work is implemented without delay.

As the Deputy has already been informed, the work referred to cannot be proceeded with, due to the refusal of some of the residents on the road to consent to blasting operations, which are an essential part of the work.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary's office not aware that this is a connecting road leading to a creamery serving many farmers in this district, and that as far as the consent is concerned, every one of these people who have land adjoining this road has consented, and that the money has been lodged in the Parliamentary Secretary's office with a view to having this work carried out? The only objection to the scheme is from an old lady who has no land adjoining the road and who has complained to the Parliamentary Secretary's office that, if this work is carried out, it may cause an annoyance. I want this situation made clear and I want a reply from the Parliamentary Secretary.

Question No. 22.

Could not the Ceann Comhairle advise Deputy Murphy to borrow the Tánaiste's hammer to use on the Parliamentary Secretary?

Blasting operations have to be carried out. Right beside it there is a house and, until these people give consent, we cannot carry out the work.

Is not the Parliamentary Secretary good at blasting?

I did not blast you out of it, anyhow.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the general public utility of the proposed work and the fact that it involves the connection of two public roads, he will reconsider his decision disapproving of the rural improvement scheme submitted by Mr. Thomas O'Neill and others of Lissacalra, Schull.

I am advised that the road referred to is not of use to the general public and is used only by the local landholders of whom only two would require to use the whole of the road. I regret, therefore, that I cannot alter the decision already communicated to the Deputy that the cost of repairs would be excessive in relation to the utility of the work.
