Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nuclear Energy: Training of Students.

asked the Minister for Education whether any provision is being made for the education and training (a) here and (b) abroad of Irish students and technicians in the field of nuclear energy.

All students taking the Honours Course in Psychics for the degree in Science study nuclear energy as part of their course.

University College, Dublin, is at present providing a two years' course in nuclear energy for practising engineers and science graduates. Other university institutions have likewise provided, or are about to provide, courses or series of public lectures on the subject.

In these circumstances there is no special provision for the training abroad of Irish students in this field, but Irish students of physics pursuing post-graduate courses abroad are, by the nature of their work, in touch with developments. I understand, however, that a number of members of the staffs of the several university institutions as part of their normal activities have followed, or are at present following, courses in nuclear energy abroad.

The question of the training of technicians in the field of nuclear energy does not arise pending the initiation of measures for the installation of a nuclear power reactor.
